The role of
occupational therapy in arthritis care is multifaceted: from group education to
individual hand splinting and foot orthotic intervention, to advocating on
patients behalf. Skills learned over decades by the Occupational Therapists at
the Victoria Arthritis Centre will be shared with attendees. The information
presented in this workshop is based on evidence practise guidelines, as well as
many years of experience in arthritis care. The day will be comprised of both
lecture and small group interactive components. There will be opportunities for
hands on experience.
This
workshop will offer:
1.
An overview of clinical features of the most
common forms of arthritis.
2.
An update on medications used in these
conditions.
3.
Splinting options for patients with arthritis.
Footwear and orthotic
recommendations.
4.
Joint Protection and Fatigue management
information that can be utilized in a
one on

Presenter: Pat McKee
Each
participant will be guided through a unique, active learning educational
experience, which involves viewing videos of cadaveric dissected specimens and
drawing the hand muscles with coloured markers onto a glove on which the bones
have been printed. Client stories will be presented to illustrate (a) the
anatomical cause of muscle imbalance resulting from nerve injuries and orthotic
intervention to substitute for lost motor power (b) extensor mechanism
pathology and orthotic intervention (c) orthotic intervention for musicians, a
head-injured Paralympic cyclist and persons with extreme joint hypermobility.
Guidelines for an occupation-based approach to orthotic intervention will be
discussed.
