Course Information:
This 2 day, hands on, workshop will provide occupational therapists with the opportunity to learn and practice functional structured activities used to assess and treat cognition in adults. We will review a number of standardized assessments and identify their strengths and limitations. We will analyze cognitive components including insight, organization, problem solving, attention, memory, flexibility and executive function and discuss how to identify a client’s cognitive strengths, reduce impairment and provide accommodation to enable occupational engagement.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify and analyze cognitive components during functional activities
- Apply professional reasoning to select appropriate methods to assess cognition
- Identify the strengths & limitations of a number of standardized assessments
- Define mental capacity in the practice setting and how it relates to clients with aphasia
- Understand how to grade cognitive demand on activities
- Document the cognitive strengths and weaknesses of their client

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Debby McQuillen OT Reg. (Ont.) is an occupational therapist with more than 30 years of experience working in the areas of adult general medicine, geriatrics and neurological rehabilitation in both the public and private sectors. She has worked and spoken across Canada including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec on topics including perception and cognition. She presently works in outpatient neurology, conducts driving assessments for medically at risk drivers and provides workshops on assessing and treating cognition.
