International Health Initiatives: Facilitating the Delivery of Sustainable Rehabilitation Services

International Health Initiatives (IHI) is an organization
of rehabilitation professionals that developed from a
shared commitment to sustainable and ethical delivery
of community-based rehabilitation in developing
countries.  IHI is committed to working with health
care providers in developing countries to facilitate the
delivery of rehabilitation services and promote the
participation of people with disabilities in their local
communities.  Our mission is to: collaborate with
national and international organizations, to promote
the role of interdisciplinary rehabilitation, to facilitate
communities in developing countries to build their own
capacity, and to act as a resource for interdisciplinary
rehabilitation professionals

IHI is involved in projects in Cambodia and
Cameroon, as well as supporting and collaborating
with other international organizations. The Cameroon
Upper Extremity Rehabilitation Program (CUERP) aims
to broaden the range of upper extremity rehabilitation
services available in the North West region of
Cameroon through supporting the continuing
education of local clinicians. The Cambodia
Rehabilitation Program is being developed following
completion of a needs assessment, working in close
collaboration with local Cambodian physiotherapists,
the Cambodian Physical Therapy Association and Rose
Charities Canada.

IHI is comprised primarily of occupational and
physiotherapists. We are based out of Vancouver but
members are able to participate in meetings remotely
through Skype. If you would like to network, share
experiences and resources, and work collaboratively
on our current and future projects, of if you just want
to learn more about IHI, please visit:

The next meeting is scheduled for July 9, 2013 at
5:30pm in DHCC 5213, in the Diamond Centre beside
Vancouver General Hospital (2775 Laurel Street,
Vancouver).
