Fraser
Valley Bridges conference hosted hundreds of occupational therapists for the
region’s annual conference on October 2, 2013 during Occupational Therapy
month.
CAOT-BC was proud to attend as well. Advisory Council members Amit
Kumar, Inderneet Mann and Mary Glasgow Brown met many therapists while
providing information and engaging in discussion on CAOT and CAOT-BC’s national
and provincial activities.
Among
the day’s schedule, morning keynote speaker, Linda Norton, provided food
for thought when working with clients who have bariatric considerations. Bias
towards people who are morbidly obese needs to be addressed she challenged,
referencing a recent White Coat Black Art episode on CBC radio (http://www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/White+Coat+Black+Art/Full+Episodes/2013/ID/2409297228/
). Knowing the weight capacity of parallel bars, commodes and other typical
equipment is a good starting point. Raising awareness regarding the need for
bariatric education and equipment in all settings was her challenge.
Happy
OT Month to therapists throughout the province, we would love to hear how you
celebrate as well!
