Prepping for BC's CAOT Conference 2013

I just received the first Call for Papers for CAOT 2013 Conference in Victoria. The postcard tucked into the OT Line magazine is beautiful. Pink and green whales swim alongside a fishing boat with the beach, mountains, and brightly colored houses in the foreground. As others start packing their bags for this year's conference in Ottawa, I'm starting to think back to my first conference in Halifax and ahead to the conference in BC next year.

My first CAOT conference was in Halifax three years ago.  I presented a poster with a friend detailing our experience as students in a community based practicum and how that fit into Occupational Therapy and community development. Bright oranges, pinks and yellows, the poster looked amazing (thanks to my dad, who is a graphic designer). I was unreasonably nervous leading up to our little presentation, standing beside familiar faces, I realized the conversation was really the purpose of poster. One of the author's whose work I sited (Heidi Lauckner*) joined us for the presentation and we were able to engage in discussion about how our experience related to the work she was doing on the other side of the province.

At the conference two weeks ago one of the editors of one of the leading journals in burns challenged the audience to publish the work we do. I would expand on that challenge to remind you, an Occupational Therapist in BC, to think about the work you do and what you have to share with others. The CAOT conference is an amazing opportunity to tell others about the research you've found and how you apply it in your setting. Maybe you've started a new project or have expanded research. Perhaps you are working on your Masters or are collaborating with other departments or organizations in researching Occupational Therapy Practice. We want to hear about it!

With over a year away from the national conference touching down in Victoria I would encourage you to put together a submission for the conference. Deadlines are September 15, 2012. Proposals online will be available soon. Grab a coworker, a friend, or spend a couple hours at a coffee shop or in your kitchen on your own and lets hear what great things Occupational Therapists in BC are involved in!
