I have practiced occupational therapy for 15 years and graduated with my B.Sc. OT in 1998 from UBC. While still in school, I quickly realized my passion was Vocational Rehabilitation. I graduated at a time when WorkSafeBC was in the early phases of rolling out its private network of providers and I got a chance to work in most programs that involved occupational therapists during my first 3 years of practice and have focused my clinical work in Vocational Rehabilitation since graduation. In addition to return-to-work focused rehabilitation, I gained skills in ergonomic risk factor evaluations, disability management for employers, functional capacity evaluations and management of interdisciplinary rehab programs with responsibility in HR, operations and QA functions. In 2002, I obtained my certified work capacity evaluator designation through Roy Matheson and Associates and I began completing medical legal FCEs in 2005 when I joined Community Therapists. After joining CT, I developed additional skills in Home Health and learned to apply my vocational rehabilitation skills in a much more diverse set of clinical contexts.
Professional Community Involvement
I’ve served as a board member for BCSOT for 3 years and during that
time, I chaired the Business Relations Advisory Committee. This is now the
CAOT-BC Private Practice Network of which I remain an active member. I have and
continue to enjoy the professional collaboration with fellow private practice
members in dealing with a host of issues of mutual concern. Over the years I’ve
remained connected with UBC through hosting clinic visits, guest speaking on
private practice and vocational rehabilitation, sitting on the admissions
committee, serving as a teaching assistant for Ergonomics and also teaching the
Vocational Rehabilitation Module as part of the MOT. I’ve taught this module
for 5 years (4 years consecutively) and this has been a wonderful experience.
The OS&OT department provided me with the time and resources to completely
redevelop the curriculum so that it could meet the needs of entry-level
practice in vocational rehabilitation in BC while still remaining evidence
based. I love working with students and being challenged by their thoughtful
questions. I was recently awarded a Clinical Faculty Appointment at UBC and
hold the rank of Clinical Instructor.
My Current Role
I am the Managing Director for Community Therapists. My role
complements that of our other 2 Clinical Directors and between the 3 of us, we
share in the overall management of the practice. My administrative focus is
business development, strategic planning and business operations. Clinically, I
lead our FCE team and provide mentorship to therapists practicing FCE. Overall,
its my job to make sure our practice grows and that our operational systems and
procedures meet the demands of supporting our staff to deliver exceptional
results for clients, customers and other stakeholders. I’m lucky to work with
such intelligent, passionate and hard working healthcare and business
professionals that care just as much about our clients and customers as they do
each other. Occupational therapy has proved to be rewarding career choice for
me with lots of opportunity to learn, grow and share my experiences.
