BC board position open

There is an immediate opportunity to become the interim CAOT board director for British Columbia, for the term ending September 30, 2019. An appointment will be made by the CAOT board executive committee who will select from a list of occupational therapist CAOT-BC members expressing interest in the role. Submit your CV and a brief letter of introduction and intent to Catherine Backman, CAOT President, at nomination@caot.ca. The deadline for submission is Friday October 26.

Upcoming CAOT Online Workshop: Integrating occupational therapist assistants

Client access to occupational therapy can be improved by the timely and appropriate involvement of OTAs in service delivery.  The knowledge and skills of OTAs have evolved with the advancement in their education to accredited Diploma programs across Canada, while there continues to be OTAs from other educational backgrounds receiving on-the-job training in occupational therapy.  The result for clinical practice is the need to review collaboration between therapists and assistants in both public and private funded work environments, including ways to improve and expand OTA involvement in delivering occupational therapy to clients.  Professional dialogue must occur to create a vision of effective intraprofessional occupational therapy for our clients resulting in the achievement of optimal occupational performance.

AJOT: Interventions for Women with Substance Abuse Issues: A Scoping Review

There has been a clear shift toward harm-reduction and a multi-faceted intervention approach using education, psychotherapy, and developing component skills. There is some evidence to support the efficacy of occupation-based intervention, but more evidence is sorely needed.

BJOT: Occupational therapists' contributions to fostering older adults' social participation: A scoping review

It appears to be cost-effective to foster social participation in older adults and OTs must find ways to incorporate this into practice. Community stakeholders must be engaged in research.

CJOT: Occupational transition in the process of becoming housed following chronic homelessness

To increase instances of community inclusion, housing retention, and adequate support for people who transition from being homeless to housed, the occupations of a chronically homeless person must be considered.

CAOT Professional Development: Mentorship on Demand

This new CAOT mentorship program allows individuals (“mentees”) to seek mentorship “on demand” (when they need it). Mentees will explore the concepts of mentorship, to identify professional reflective goals and to be matched with a mentor based on similar values, interests and professional paths. Mentees and mentors work together for a period of 6 months to address reflective goals established by the mentee and guided by the mentor. This experience is intended to open a new chapter in professional and, often, personal lives.

3. Submit your completed workbook and Mentee Profile to receive personalized facilitated matching with a mentor.
4. As part of Mentorship On Demand, you will work with your mentor for 6 months towards your professional goals. At the end of the program, you will receive a certificate of completion.

CAOT Workshop: Ergonomics for occupational therapists - Conducting back injury interventions in the workplace

In this two-day interactive and hands-on workshop, you will learn and apply up-to-date scientific evidence and ergonomic assessment techniques pertaining to the identification, assessment and intervention of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. Participants will practice the steps in conducting an ergonomic assessment in the workplace using a variety of validated tools with videotaped case studies. Participants will identify risk management solutions that focus on preventing further injury in the job, or facilitating return-to-work of an injured worker.
