Research related to the families of military personnel and Veterans has grown considerably in the past decade, both in Canada and around the world. This interdisciplinary field of research has contributed to raising awareness of the service-related experiences, and its impacts, on families; identifying gaps; and advancing knowledge to inform policy, practice, and future research. Experts in the field will share how far family research has come over the last 10 years, present recent advances in family research, and discuss pathways forward for enhancing research relevance, reach, uptake, and impact for the decade ahead.

Seating and mobility equipment are the essential components of our clients’ environment. The majority of long‐term care (LTC) clients are wheelchair users who spend 12‐16 hours a day sitting. Seating is intimately linked to personal comfort, function, and safety. Over the past couple of decades, seating has evolved into a high-tech and an evidence-based field, yet the developments have not been fully integrated into healthcare.

How can seating design help with prevention of falls, infections, and pressure injuries? Can the improved seating comfort translate to the reduction of pain, less medications, and lower incidence of responsive behaviors?

Properly selected seat cushions provide not only skin protection but may also reduce the risk of falls. Appropriately prescribed and adjusted cushions and backrests may improve comfort and sitting tolerance, facilitate mobility, independence and social interaction. Incorporating the latest developments in chemistry and textiles, seating products also provide an unprecedented level of infection control.

We will talk about the matters important in the LTC and create links between various disciplines and the world of seating mobility. This presentation will focus on the major quality metrics of the LTC industry that may be addressed by an evidence-based seating and mobility design. But most importantly, we will talk about seating as an area that may lower the numbers of preventable incidents and health complications.

Presented by: Anna Sokol, RN, MN, BScN, BScKin is the Invacare® Matrx® Clinical Education Specialist for Canada. Anna is a Registered Nurse with Emergency, SCI Rehabilitation, and Community care experiences. In her previous role, she was overseeing provision of nursing, therapy, and personal support services to clients living at home and those receiving long-term care at group homes and retirement residences.

HMEDA Webinar Series: Support Surfaces

This series of three lunch-and-learn presentations provide education relating to prevention of and care for individuals at risk of developing pressure injuries.  The presentations will be of interest to clinicians, home medical equipment providers, and care-providers. Each session is scheduled to begin at 12:05 pm, wrapping up by 12:50 pm.

This first session focuses on Clinical Concepts Relating to Support Surfaces and Prevention of Pressure Injuries, presented by Kelly Bethune, OT. The second session focuses on Properties and Applications of Foams and Composite Surfaces. The third session focuses on Low Air Loss and Alternating Pressure Surfaces.

Our purpose in presenting these sessions in sequence is to reinforce active collaboration between prescribers, equipment providers, and direct care providers to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Upcoming CAOT Online Workshop: Integrating occupational therapist assistants

Client access to occupational therapy can be improved by the timely and appropriate involvement of OTAs in service delivery.  The knowledge and skills of OTAs have evolved with the advancement in their education to accredited Diploma programs across Canada, while there continues to be OTAs from other educational backgrounds receiving on-the-job training in occupational therapy.  The result for clinical practice is the need to review collaboration between therapists and assistants in both public and private funded work environments, including ways to improve and expand OTA involvement in delivering occupational therapy to clients.  Professional dialogue must occur to create a vision of effective intraprofessional occupational therapy for our clients resulting in the achievement of optimal occupational performance.

Are you interested in attending an interactive educational webinar in the spring of 2018 to learn more about a new DCD Advocacy Toolkit?

This toolkit has been developed for Occupational therapists (OTs), as we play a key role in DCD assessment and treatment. Recent research has shown that OTs in BC report a lack of knowledge about best practices in DCD assessment and treatment, and an interest in developing advocacy skills to support children and families. The DCD Advocacy Toolkit was developed to target these gaps.

The DCD Advocacy Toolkit webinar will include:

• A review of DCD and its implications
• A thorough overview of the Toolkit, including resources and best practice guidelines.

The webinar will increase participants' understanding and knowledge both of current evidence-based guidelines for DCD diagnosis and intervention. OTs will learn how to apply this evidence in the assessment and treatment of clients with suspected DCD, and to more effectively advocate for diagnoses when appropriate. After attending this webinar, OTs will have new awareness of tools and resources to support best practice and enhanced knowledge of advocacy opportunities in BC.

Webinar Description:

Trauma informed health practices are the latest buzz words in the health field. The new is really the old. Teachings of the Elders and the practicing of these teachings have been the saving graces for many Indigenous Nations, amidst the adversity of historic trauma and the resultant complexities of grief and loss and lateral violence.

 

In this time of reconciliation, many Nations are slowly coming to terms (and actually starting to speak of historic trauma). These topics are not only complex, but at a community level, they've contributed to significant pain mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically.

 

This webinar was presented by Dr. Patricia Makokis, of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Extension, and Dr. Margo Greenwood, of Northern Health and the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health (NCCAH). Dr. Makokis spoke from a community-based perspective, while Dr. Greenwood spoke to her work within the regional provincial health authority and the NCCAH. Both have worked in the field of community-based health for a number of years.

• Provide participants with a brief overview of pre-contact values and laws;
• Explore the complexities of historic trauma and lateral violence within communities; and
• Review current trauma informed health practices.
