Invitation to Share your Perspective on Paid Sick Leave

Currently, almost half of BC workers do not have access to paid sick leave. This is especially difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic as many people had to take time off to reduce workplace exposures and ease pressure on the healthcare system and save lives.

The provincial government has announced that a paid sick leave program for BC workers will come into effect on January 1, 2022. Details are still yet to be determined and the government is asking British Columbians for input.

The BC government survey on paid sick leave is currently open right now, The survey mainly consists of demographic questions about your current paid sick leave plan and your pre-COVID use of sick days. It should take less than three minutes to complete.

This is an opportunity to let the provincial government know that every worker in BC should have access to at least 10 employer-paid sick days and that those paid sick days will help to keep everyone safe, especially during the pandemic.

HandyDART Modernization Program: OT Feedback needed before April 25!

Announced on March 29 2021, TransLink is launching the HandyDART Modernization Program that includes a package of updates designed to ensure the service remains accessible and flexible for those who need it now and in the future. The program represents one of the biggest customer improvements to HandyDART since its inception in 1980 and will prepare the region as Metro Vancouver’s population continues to grow and get older.

Between March 29 and April 25, TransLink is seeking feedback from current and future HandyDART customers, caregivers, family members, service providers, and accessibility champions on the following:

• Bringing Compass to HandyDART
• Potential changes to fares
• Potential new registration process

It is important that occupational therapists voice their perspective on how these changes will impact HandyDART users, many of whom are both OT clients and service users.

Impacts of COVID-19 on health care workers: Share your perspective

BC Guidelines External Review Invitation to Occupational Therapists

BC Guidelines External Review Invitation to Occupational Therapists - Falls: Prevention, Risk Assessment and Management for Community-Dwelling Older Adults guideline. 

This new guideline addresses the identification and care management as needed of older adults aged ≥ 65 years living in the community with risk factors for falls. The guideline facilitates individualized assessment and provides a framework and tools to manage risk factors for falls and prevent fall-related injuries. BC Guidelines are clinical practice guidelines and protocols that provide recommendations to BC primary care practitioners on delivering high quality, appropriate care to patients.

Canadian Pain Task Force consultation: Share your input on how Canada should address the issue of pain

In spring of 2019, Health Canada established the Canadian Pain Task Force (CPTF) to recommend an
improved approach to pain care, education, research and data monitoring in Canada.

As part of its mandate, the Task Force has launched a public consultation to learn more about the
issues, needs, and priorities that matter most to Canadians in order to improve how pain is understood and managed in our country. The consultation is open to anyone with an interest in pain, including people living with pain, caregivers, health care providers, researchers, policy makers and the general public. 

The input received from this public consultation will help inform the Task Force’s second report to Health Canada in June 2020, which will outline elements of an improved approach to pain in Canada. 

The consultation includes questions on barriers to addressing pain, ways to better understand, prevent and manage chronic pain, and informing and improving Canada’s approach to pain. It should take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete and respondents have the option to save their progress and return to the survey at any time before the closing date. The consultation is available from February 27 until April 17, 2020 and can be accessed at https://www.letstalkhealth.ca/pain.

Provide your input on proposed changes to how occupational therapy is regulated in BC

The B.C. Government Steering Committee on Modernization of Health Professional Regulation is currently collecting public feedback as they develop a proposal for how British Columbia’s Health Professions Act should be modernized. 

Proposed areas of change include: 

• the number of regulatory colleges in B.C.
• occupational therapy would be regulated by the College of Health and Care Professions of B.C., an amalgamation of regulatory colleges of many professions, including: chiropractors, dietitians, massage therapists, naturopathic physicians, opticians, optometrists, physical therapists, psychologists, speech and hearing professionals, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, acupuncturists and the diagnostic and therapeutic professions
• college governance (including board size and composition) 
• the oversight of regulatory colleges (including creation of a new oversight body)
• the complaints and adjudication process
• legislation regarding information sharing between regulatory colleges and other agencies

CAOT-BC is currently collaborating with stakeholders to prepare an official submission response to the consultation.

Help choose the best visual for Inclusive Space

This is a project of a team of disabled and non-disabled people who are artists, researchers, students, and health or human service professionals at the University of British Columbia in Canada.

The goal is to create an image that could be used as a sticker, to indicate that this is a place where human rights are respected and where disabled people/people with disabilities and their friends and allies are welcomed and supported.

The Inclusive Space team invited graphic designers from all over the world to submit their suggestions, and these are the best three designs. The design that will have the most votes will be chosen, and the symbol will be distributed internationally.
