Topic: Introduction to LEADS

Description: The LEADS in a Caring Environment leadership capabilities framework was developed at Royal Roads University, through funding provided by the British Columbia provincial government, in 2006. This Canadian innovation has been endorsed and integrated in health organizations, authorities and systems across Canada and is drawing international attention as nothing similar exists or has been accomplished in health leadership globally. This webinar introduces participants to the LEADS framework including its’ development and validation, the uptake across Canada, the evidence supporting the framework, the theoretical underpinnings and the methods of introduction, integration and sustainability within an organization. 

The first hour of the webinar is hosted by LEADS Canada through an Adobe Connect virtual platform and runs for approximately one hour in total.  The majority of the webinar is presentation format, with an opportunity for an interactive Q&A session at the conclusion of the presentation.


The remaining 30 minutes will be hosted by CAOT-BC via GoToMeeting, and include networking and discussion.

Description: This presentation will highlight the OT Enhanced Surface Program, a pilot project developed with the objectives of optimizing the use of specialty surfaces, reducing costs in an acute care setting, and improving patient care outcomes. OT Professional Practice Leader Sharon Campbell will describe the development of the program, as well as the resulting cost savings and benefits of implementation within Interior Health.

CAOT-BC Leadership Practice Network Meeting: June 27, 2017

Topic: What is Knowledge translation (KT) & how can OT leaders facilitate it in the OT profession in BC? Presented by Alison Hoens

This session will provide an overview of what KT is, and isn’t, why it is important, and how OT leaders can support their clinicians and researchers in KT practices to facilitate adoption of effective evidence-informed care.

Alison Hoens holds two positions: (1) the PHC Physiotherapy Research, Education & Practice Coordinator ( PT REP- C) at Providence Health Care and (2) the Physical Therapy Knowledge Broker (PT KB). In the REP-C role she supports 130 PTs and 40-50 Rehab Assistants across PHC to participate in research, access continuing education and  support clinical decision making for complex patients. The PT KB role is  jointly funded by UBC Faculty of Medicine (Dept of Physical Therapy), the Physiotherapy Association of BC and  the Research Institutes of PHC anc VCH. This role facilitates partnerships between clinicians, researchers and decision makers in order to enhance evidence-informed care. However, she is currently seconded for 2 years as the Knowledge Translation Specialist at the BC SUPPORT Unit (www.bcsupportunit.ca).

The importance of advocacy efforts, CAOT-BC’s current advocacy agenda and resources that support CAOT-BC members grassroots efforts will be reviewed.  Participants at the session will have an opportunity to put forward their recommendations on way forward approaches, priorities and strategies.

In health care, communication breakdowns often seem small and go unnoticed, when they can greatly influence the outcome of a patients’ safety and quality of care. Communication is complex and subject to misunderstanding and misinterpretation.  How we work as a team and communicate with each other are essential parts of a healthy culture.  If you want to shift culture, then teamwork and communication are key components to consider.

Dysfunction in teamwork and communication is often "the elephant in the room". In this session we will light up the “elephant” and discuss some tools that can be used to communicate effectively.

Leadership Practice Network Meeting: September 28th, 2016

Topic: Developing Influence as a Tool for Leadership - Presented by Salim Janmohamed

There are many books and courses about leadership and many leadership principles are well understood or even self-evident.  As authorities in our respective institutions, occupational therapist leaders are skilled at leading and influencing our direct reports and peers. But does the power of our influence extend beyond our workplaces to the stakeholders that make decisions which impact us? Can we improve our ability to positively influence these stakeholders to support organizational goals? In this session, evidence based and time tested principles of influence building are examined in the context of challenges faced by OT leaders.

Salim Janmohamed is an occupational therapist and the Managing Director of Community Therapists, an interdisciplinary rehabilitation practice. He holds a graduate degree in Business from Sauder (UBC) and is the lead clinical instructor of Vocational Rehabilitation for the Master of OT program at UBC.
