August 8, 2012 (Victoria)- CAOT-BC represented BC occupational therapists in a meeting with representatives from the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles Branch (OSMV), Driver Fitness and Intervention Branch. Hosted at the office of the College of Occupational Therapists of BC, attendees included CAOT-BC, COTBC and the Director of Medical Fitness and Intervention.
As per previous amendments to the BC Motor Vehicle Act, occupational therapists are part of the current health care professionals' list who have a duty to report and authority to report under the Act about concerns of a person's fitness to drive as a result of a medical condition or functional impairment. Amendments to section 230 are still not in force as the regulations developed by OSMV are not yet finalised by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
It was confirmed at our meeting this week that the approval of the regulations is delayed indefinitely at this time. In the meantime, please continue to refer to the BC Guide in Determining Fitness to Drive (2010).
An update will be posted once the regulations are finalised and in force.
CAOT-BC would like to thank COTBC for hosting the meeting this week.
