This month marks a very new and very special event for COTF – a concerted campaign, calling on CAOT members to help us raise the money we need to make your jobs better and to ensure that Canadians receive the assistance they need to resume daily living. While in some years we have managed to disburse up to $80,000 annually for research and scholarships, in leaner times we were only able to reach a quarter of that target, diminishing the amount of funds we could allocate and reducing your ability to either do new research or enjoy the professional benefits of that research.
We all agree that best practice in occupational therapy occurs when therapists, working in partnership with client(s), use research evidence along with clinical knowledge and reasoning to implement interventions that are effective. In a recent survey, in which many of you participated, a striking 99% agreed that research findings are important to your day-to-day practice. That tells us that research is extremely valuable to you and that the provision of research and scholarship dollars is important. We want to continue doing our jobs by supplying you with the tools you need.
On October 10, when our team gives you a call seeking a financial donation, please Just Say Yes! … to our profession’s future … to the future of occupational therapists and to the future of everyone who needs occupational therapy in Canada. Just Say Yes! Yes to research. Yes to clinician-academic research partnerships. Yes to new evidence for your practice. Yes to graduate scholarships. And Yes to support new research.
