Guest Speaker: Laura Fawcett, OT
Laura Fawcett has been an occupational therapist for 9 years. Before becoming an Assistive Technology
Consultant at GF Strong, she worked in a wide range of practice settings (Burns
and Plastics; Acute Care for Elders, Transitional Care, & Spinal Cord Injury
Rehabilitation). Laura is also a clinical
instructor for the UBC MOT program and enjoys teaching students about all the
wonders of Assistive Technology.
Presentation Summary
Most main stream technology
is designed to be used by individuals with the full use of their hands, leaving
people with a variety of disabilities unable to access technology in a typical
way. This presentation will explore the
concept of Access as it applies to technology.
The difference between direct and indirect access will be explained as
well as options for how devices such as TV remote controls and Alternative and
Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices can be used by people with decreased
upper extremity function.
