Resource for your Practice: Claiming Medical Expenses on Income Tax Return

Did you know you can claim medical expenses on your income tax and benefit return?

You can reduce the amount of federal tax you pay by claiming a non-refundable tax credit on a wide variety of medical expenses, including hospital services, nursing home fees, and medical supplies.

Did you know you can also claim travel expenses?

If you traveled at least 40 kilometres (one way) from your home to get medical services you may be able to claim the public transportation or vehicle expenses you paid, and if you traveled at least 80 kilometres (one way) you may also be able to claim accommodation, meal, and parking expenses.

A refundable medical expense supplement is available to those with low income and high medical expenses.
