Evidence for your Practice: Motivational Interviewing Improves Sustainable Return to Work

Article for review:
Gross, D. P., Park, J., Rayani, F., Norris, C. M., & Esmail, S. (2017). Motivational interviewing improves sustainable return to work in injured workers after rehabilitation: a cluster randomized controlled trial. Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation98(12), 2355-2363.

This cluster randomized control trial examined the effects of motivational interviewing interventions on workers compensation claimants undergoing rehabilitation for musculoskeletal conditions. Outcome measures included compensation outcomes over 1 year after discharge, including reception of disability benefits and recurrence rates. Unemployed claimants in the intervention group received significantly more partial temporary disability benefits, indicating return to modified work duties.

Conclusion:
Use of motivational interviewing appears to lead to more sustainable return to work after rehabilitation and facilitates transition to modified work duties.
