CAOT-BC Community OT Practice Network Meeting: March 26, 2018

Topic: Helpful Home Changes for Safety and Independence

Presenter: Elizabeth Tang, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

Description: Despite seniors’ strong desire of aging in place, increasing limitations on activities of daily living is one of the main reasons why seniors give up their homes to move into residential care. Home adaptation for the changing needs is one way to help seniors maintain or restore independent lifestyles and stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Adapting the homes can be done by means of small and inexpensive modifications. This webinar will provide simple and practical examples of home adaptation and renovations to make homes safer, more comfortable and more familiar, as well as to assist seniors, those living with dementia, and their families, friends and caregivers in meeting their daily needs. Participants will come away with information on:
  • Good planning and simple strategies to prevent falls on stairs and the resulting injuries;
  • Tips for assisting people living with dementia to remain safe and independent at home; and
  • Low-cost and no-cost home modifications to improve safety, comfort and accessibility for seniors and persons with disabilities
This meeting will take place by webinar. Registration is required to participate.
