cOnnecT with Abeed Hirji

Why did you choose OT as a career?
I was intrigued by the diverse array of work settings where OT’s could be employed.

What is your favourite thing about CAOT-BC?
The opportunities to engage in professional development as well as the opportunity to be involved and contribute to the Extended Health Benefits Task force, which I am a member of.

Where have you worked over your career? Where do you work now?

I have worked my entire career at Lifemark Health (formerly Columbia Health and Centric Health)

What has been your most interesting job?
The job that I currently assume; vestibular and concussion care.

What do you find most challenging about working as an OT?
The fact that most employers or extended health benefits administrators do not value OT and thus coverage for clients and/or patients via extended health benefits is often declined due to this lack of coverage. Needless to say, clients are not thrilled about this.

You are a volunteer for CAOT-BC, why do you do it?
I do it because I feel I can make a difference in helping to propel the profession forward.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?
I am the co-founder of a local soccer (or more appropriately Football) camp that has been running every summer since 2002.

What do you do when you aren't working and volunteering?
Hanging out and fooling around with my 3 kids!
