Evidence for your Practice: Cognitive behaviour therapy-based multicomponent interventions for fear of falling

Study Aim: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to determine the effectiveness of cognitive behaviour therapy-based multicomponent interventions on fear of falling and falls among community-dwelling older adults who are at risk of falling.


Key Findings:

  • The review included 15 randomized controlled trials of community-dwelling adults aged 60 years and older
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy-based multicomponent interventions were shown to be effective at reducing fear of falling among community-dwelling older adults who are at risk of falling

  • Fall prevention interventions need to be multifaceted
  • OTs have the skills and training to understand and attend to individual psychological, cognitive and physical needs when addressing falls risk
