Why did you choose occupational therapy as a career?
I chose OT after being involved with a paediatric assessment team at Island Health where I had the privilege of working with some very talented and inspiring OT’s. During my time there I learned the value of OT and was excited by the creative and therapeutic potential of this work.
What is your favourite thing about CAOT-BC?
The collaboration and learning that happens by way of the practice networks. The collegial support and the various opportunities within the CAOT-BC networks has truly enhanced my practice. I feel engaged as both a learner and a contributor and I am very thankful for the people I have met along the way.
Where have you worked over your career? Where do you work now?
I have always worked in private practice; it is near to my heart. First at CBI, then onto Lifemark and JR Rehab for 5 years. Now, I find myself at Evergreen Rehab where I enjoy my career in ways I did not think possible.
What do you find most challenging about working as an OT?
Taking time off! I love OT work; it doesn’t feel like work most days.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about becoming an OT?
I’d say attend an info session, look into shadowing an OT for a day and read up on the association webpages. If you can imagine yourself settling into a career where you are able to engage in meaningful, impactful and value based work that allows for growth, self-discovery and service to others then you will most certainly enjoy OT.
What do you think will change/shape practice over the next five years? Access to health care as the public and private systems evolve and expand.
What do you do when you aren't (working, studying, volunteering)? Most likely walking or running along the shoreline of a local beach.
