Resource for Your Practice: Sensory overload

Sensory overload: A guide for people with low vision

Environmental assessments are a key factor in the role of an occupational therapist. Environments have various levels of sensory stimuli, while people have differing tolerance levels for various stimuli. The main ways we perceive environmental stimuli are through sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. Experiencing too many of these stimuli at once can trigger sensory overload and unwanted symptoms such as agitation, irritability and overwhelm. The eyes connect directly to the central nervous system and play a key role in sensory experiences. Therefore, changes to vision may alter how an individual experiences the environmental stimuli around them.

Read more about this connection, symptoms of sensory overload, triggers and ways to manage for those with vision loss here.
