Evidence for your Practice: Home-Based Exercise and Alzheimer’s Disease

Ohman, H., Savikko, N., Strandberg, T.E., Kautiainen, H., Raivio, M.M., Laakkonen, M., Tilvis, R., & Pitkälä, K.H. (2016). Effects of exercise on cognition: The Finnish Alzheimer Disease exercise trial: A randomized controlled trial. Journal of American Geriatrics Society, 64(4): 731-738.

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effects of exercise on cognition for community dwelling individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease. Participants received customized home-based exercise, group-based exercise at an adult daycare centre, or usual community care (control group). Intervention was delivered two times per week for one year.

Conclusion:
Participants receiving customized home-based exercise showed mild improvement in executive function, but not in other cognitive domains.
