Working for You: CAOT submits letter to the editor

We submitted a letter to the editor of the Vancouver Sun in response to an article published July 15, 2020 “BC injury lawyers face off against occupationaltherapists over no-fault insurance.” Unfortunately, it was not accepted. It is printed below.

Editor:

BC’s occupational therapists are not “facing off” with lawyers.

Occupational therapists collaborate with many professionals to access and provide the best possible care for people injured in motor vehicle accidents, including lawyers. These partnerships are cordial, professional, and focused on the needs of the injured person.

Occupational therapists also work with individuals, groups, and communities throughout the health, social, and educational sectors in BC. The needs of the client (recipient of services) is the primary concern of all occupational therapists.

The sensational headline (July 15, 2020) suggesting that either occupational therapists or lawyers are working against each other or the best needs of their clients is misleading to the many British Columbians who count on us to help them return to the activities of daily life: work, school, play, taking care of themselves and their families.

BC’s occupational therapists will continue to advocate for benefits to meet the care needs of people injured in motor vehicle accidents. British Columbians who need support to return to and maintain their valued life activities can count on their occupational therapist to provide compassionate and effective services.
