Description: This case presentation will explore how the occupational therapist played a central role in assessing the patient’s neurological recovery and functional outcomes in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. After occupational therapy assessment and interventions, the clinical approach of the interdisciplinary team shifted from palliation to rehabilitation. Occupational therapists can play a critical role in assessing and treating patients with therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest.
Presenter: Tammam El-Khodor holds a bachelor of science in social sciences, a bachelor of science in occupational therapy, masters in rehabilitation science, and is currently completing a master of education in counselling psychology. He has been practicing as an occupational therapist for 20 years in different clinical, academic, and leadership roles. He worked in diverse clinical settings including acute care, ICU, outpatient, and home care. He has advanced training and expertise in neurological rehabilitation. He was a faculty lecturer at the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy at McGill University. At the present time he is a clinical instructor at the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy faculty at UBC. His leadership roles included establishing occupational therapy service on the neurological-surgery team and collaborated on developing an interdisciplinary protocol for spinal cord and brain injured patients at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Tammam has also published about the role of OT in ICU.
Presently, he works at Vancouver Coastal Health on the community rehab and resource team, providing community based neurological rehabilitation and consultation.
